King Edward’s Bath win Worldwise Quiz 2025

The evening of November 12th saw 14 teams from 8 different schools participate in this years quiz. A great turn out! Much anticipation.

Tony Hoare, our calm and collected quizmaster, kicked off proceedings after the rules and logistics were presented by David Richards. It’s fair to say that David was rather more stressed, as extra sheets needed to be printed in the short delay presented by the slightly-late arrival of Wye Dean School, Chepstow. Traffic issues.

Dr. Tony Hoare quizzes the teams on their meteorological symbols (Answer A!)

The standard format prevailed. Numerous rounds of question inspired by the material supplied by the GA, but upgraded to a more difficult level for Y10-Y11 students. This was supplemented by the usual map round during the break.

10 rounds: Mixed bag; Alphabet, Cities and towns, Ordnance Survey; Sustainability (1 -Anagrams); Fieldwork; Coasts; Sustainability (2); Geography from the air; Points mean prizes.

The Ordnance Survey round focused on the Severn Estuary, including the two road bridges. A famous US singer/songwriter/poet featured, as did solar panels and historic sites!!

At the midway break, both KES teams held the top two positions. QEH 1 and 2 made great progress at the end, but fell just short of KES 1 and ended up in 2nd and 3rd place. A great finish!

The scores on the board – a win by one!!

Our sincere thanks to the parents and teacher support, the GA committee and Bristol PGCE student scorers and runners.

A great time was had by all. Well done all teams. Quite the buzz!

Rohan, a member of the winning team from King Edward’s School, Bath, reflects on the evening:
“The Worldwise Geography Quiz was a fantastic event for my friends and I to go and exercise our geography general knowledge. Driving to the competition, we had high hopes and quizzed ourselves on obscure geographical questions to prepare ourselves. Nevertheless, it came as a pleasant surprise when teams KES 1 and 2 were revealed as 1st and 2nd after the first half and KES 1 as first at the end! It was great fun: we are very happy with our trophy and book prizes, and we look forward to participating in next year’s competition!”
